  • Facebook Goes Public

    After eight years, the computer hack man CEO Mark Zuckerberg creator of Facebook has decided to take his creation and go public as soon as May 2012.

    Mark Zuckeberg’s decision to make facebook go public would make him the 14th richest person in the world making him worth 24 billion, and the most powerful man in Silicon Valley, if facebook is to go public the company’s value could soar up to $100 Billion, with shares available as early as May, Facebook will have the largest IPO in internet history, beating out companies such as Google.

    Face book which has had a growth rate of 71 percent from 2009 to 2010, and an audience of over 845 million users, and over 250 million photos alone are posted on its site each day, everyone from teenagers to senior citizens log on to Face book, everyday and everyone will be benefitting from this deal.

    The announcement from Mr. Zuckerberg was that he wants to give his users control over what’s public and private. When Facebook filed a prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission in a move to make their company public, the SEC website crashed within hours of the news release.

    But they are those whom can’t wait for Facebook to go public, once facebook launches the first people to reap its rewards will be the hundreds of employees whom will get a return of up to 12,000 percent return on shares when the company goes public will become instant millionaires.

    Other people whom are looking to receive millions from this deal are people like Russian Yuri Miller, one of the richest men in the world; Yuri miller whom gains huge from this deal for Yuri is one of Facebook’s biggest investors, in the form of Digital sky technology.

    Wall Street bankers are clawing at each other to handle this megadeal, which would generate millions of dollars in fees, the likes of Goldman Sachs whom invested $50 billion in 2011.

    Microsoft which invested $150 billion in 2007 and is reported to be up to $240 billion now, Facebook indicated it hopes to raise $5 billion in its IPO. That would be the most for an Internet IPO since Google Inc

  • India, Rwanda Strengthen Cooperation

    The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Louise Mushikiwabo, and India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Preneet Kaur yesterday 15th Febuary, signed various Memoranda of Understanding to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

    Rwanda and India have established a Joint Permanent Commission on renewable energy cooperation and solar electrification of 35 schools.

    Rwanda and India have had a productive relationship since last year’s development in their education, technology, infrastructure and public sector projects amongst the many.

    Minister Mushikiwabo stated.”By show of signing these Memoranda of Understanding, Rwanda and India have agreed on a symbolic work relationship between the two countries.”

    “There are many potential sectors in which Rwanda and India’s business communities would be interested in investing” “the relationship between our nations is based on substance and quality production”.

    India’s minister Preneet Kaur whom was impressed by the rapid development of relations between the two countries, told the press “India values Rwanda as one of the fast growing and stable countries for investment, and we are committed to working with Rwanda further”.

    Kaur reflected on the rapid development in the relations between the two countries, revealing that the signing of the agreements demonstrated India’s commitment to also work with the Rwandan private sector.

    Kaur left after paying tribute to the victims of the 1994 genocide at Gisozi memorial.

  • First IGIHE Newspaper Available

    Finally the long awaited IGIHE newspaper has hit the streets of Kigali and outskirts. Regular readers of IGIHE.com website will now access the print version containing well researched and analysed articles and great design.

    A communiqué from the director of the newspaper Meilleur Murindabigwi says, “the Newspaper is a joint venture of IGIHE Ltd and Rwanda Dispatch Magazine. Our aim is to keep you informed with latest news both local and global. At the same time we want to entertain you through breath-taking leisure stories. More so we will give our readers an avenue to share their opinions on some of the issues they’re facing,” reads in part the welcome note.

    The weekly newspaper published in Kinyarwanda language, will also be circulated in neighbouring countries at the cost of Frw 500 in Rwanda while in Burundi Bfr 1200 and Uganda at USh 1,500.

    IGIHE newspaper has various segments including, National news which contains stories detailing how the witnesses of Kayumba Nyamwasa’s shooting took back their confession against Rwandan government.

    The newspaper contains a special page for Diaspora news that highlights reactions of Rwandans in Belgium who had visited Rwanda during last year’s festive season, they commend the progress and also show interests to invest back home, the event was organaized by IGIHE.com under it’s intiatiatives of giving an a platform for its readers to share their thoughts.

    On the leisure part, IGIHE newspaper offers both entertainment stories including info about the lifestyles of Musicians such as Marshal Mampa, Kidum, Kamichi amongst others.

    While on sports, this first issue highlights more on the African Cup of Nations soccer league and details of the winning of Zambia’s Chipolopolo team over Ivory Coast.

    According to the majority of public opinions, the paper introduces the modern way of reporting news professionally unlike rumors and plagiarism manifested in some of the local tabloids.

    “Thank God this newspaper has a different way of delivering news, because, trust me in the past we used to read junk from local tabloids which often embarrassed our leaders with fact-less speculations,” said David Kanyakore minutes after reading the weekly.

    Another reader Carol Umutoni, “Wow…the design is unique and I especially like the cooking segment which shows a recipe of preparing fish soup. I also like the science section.”

  • Farmers Benefit From Pyrethrum Investments

    Rwanda which now produces 15% of the world’s pyrethrum has now become one of Rwanda’s potential business prospects, a business that Rwanda not only profits from economically but also greatly benefits local farmers.

    Pyrethrum is a small white flower that is found in many gardens, along the streets and on our kitchen window sills, A natural, flowered pesticide that is currently on very high demand on the global market.

    But this flower can only be grown purely with almost 70% to 80% of it active ingredients in only four countries worldwide, Kenya, Australia, Tanzania and lastly Rwanda.

    SOPYRWA, Rwanda’s only pyrethrum refinery industry that had nearly collapsed is now being revived. When Horizon Group took over SOPYRWA in 2008, the refinery was running at only 6% of installed capacity, Last year, while the global market share surged from 6% to 15%, and export revenues increased by 380%, the pyrethrum flower production increased from 209 to 700 megatons.

    The increase in the production of the pyrethrum contributed to the household incomes of over 8,000 farmers and increased land under pyrethrum cultivation.

    Kenya which had dominated the production of the pyrethrum flower for the last decade, producing at least 70% of the worlds trade, has collapsed due to mishandling and delayed payments to farmers which caused a massive drop in the production hence leaving Rwanda a huge advantage, with not only it’s ideal weather climate with its volcanic soil which is perfect for the flower nutrients, but also with its increase in business environment

    Now SOPYRWA is focusing on re-building, with Rwanda having one of the richest volcanic soil, it has the potential to produce some of the world’s best pyrethrum, SOPYRWA’S aim is to increase the flower pyrethrum up to 20% of the global market, by working with private cooperatives whom deal directly with the famers whom make up at least 15,000 plus their families, framers will receive higher prices, a stronger seeds and most beneficial is immediate payment.

    Working with a UK based global partnerships and Rwandan government backing; SOPYRWA is developing additional products for the local region.

  • Kibagabaga Hospital Expansion Underway

    Kibagabaga Hospital authorities in collaboration with Belgian Technical Cooperation (BTC) have announced plans to expand the hospital in order to improve their service delivery to the customers.

    Dr. Christian Ntizimira, the head of the hospital, told IGIHE.com that all the problems are due to the unexpected big number of patients they treat.

    He said, “Normally, Kibagabaga Hospital is supposed to receive 200 patients but nowadays the number has increased to almost three times.”

    He added that the big number of patients they treat is due to the fact that Gasabo district is resided by 50% of the Kigali city population as a whole.

    Dr. Christian Ntizimira together with Dr. Blaise Uhagaze, the head of BTC in Rwanda said that, in the expansion, they expect to build a house with many floors.

    This comes after an excessive number of patients appear in the hospital compound as well as in sick rooms.

    In toilets, there is a terribly bad smell as IGIHE.com noticed when it was visiting the hospital on Wednesday, the 15th February 2012.

    Kibagabaga Hospital is located in Kimironko sector Gasabo district and is mostly attended by a big number of patients because of their appreciated service delivery.

  • Vendor Rewarded for Exemplary Conduct

    Felipe Bizimungu a vendor and teenager was rewarded Frw25,000 for returning valuable items in a bag belonging to a French visitor Yannick Belfour 42 that had travelled from Burundi to Rwanda on urgent business.

    Belfour told our reporter what had happened and his reasons to why he decided to give the vendor a large sum of money as a reward.

    Belfour arrived in Kigali in the afternoon, Tired and in a rush for his evening appointment he quickly got off the bus to rush and make arrangements for a place to stay. In the rush to alight from the bus, he forgot his carryon bag underneath his seat.He realized the bag was missing after arriving at the hotel.

    The carryon bag contained his cash, passport, and laptop, and on him all he had were his bag full of documents. The hotel management advised Belfour to call the police and report his property stolen, while on his way to the police station.

    He later received a call from a man speaking to him in Kinyarwanda, but Belfour says was preoccupied with his own affairs on hand hang up despite the phone kept ringing.

    He finally decided to ask the taxi driver to help translate, as soon as the driver hang up the driver pulledover and explained to Belfour that his belongings were safe and the man who had them was the one calling on phone.

    As they arrived back at the Virunga bus park, and searched for the man, they instead found a young man around 15 years of age, moving through the crowd yelling out prices of his goods, sticking his head through windows of the buses while holding in his right hand, his small payphone and cards and on his left shoulder Belfour’s carryon.

    Belfour was so shocked that he gave the boy a reward of Frw 25, 000.

    “it wasn’t only because I was so relieved but because it also meant that the boy had looked in my bag in order to find my card, so he must have seen the Frw100,000 in an envelope in the bag and still didn’t steal it, I think he deserved every franc.”

    “not only that when i asked him how he knew which number to call, he told me he looked for a card that had Burundian and Rwandan numbers on it, he used his own credit to call me, and even if I hung up various times he insisted, it is the initiative that counts.

    Belfour concluded by saying “I knew that Rwanda was a safe country, but this has just blown my mind”.

  • World Bank President To Step Down

    World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick has announced today he would step down in June 30th, this year which will be the end of a five-year term.

    It is believed that his term, the transformed Bank played a historic role during the global economic crisis, using record replenishments to provide more than $247 billion to help developing countries boost growth and overcome poverty.

    “I’m honored to have led such a world class institution with so many talented and exceptional people. Together we have focused on supporting developing countries to navigate crises and adjust to global economic shifts,” Zoellick said.

    “The Bank has recognized that we live in a world of multiple poles of growth where traditional concepts of the Third World are now outdated and where developing countries have a key role to play as growth drivers and responsible stakeholders. At the same time, we’ve scaled up our support to poor people, countries, and communities and shown that the Bank can be an indispensable innovator, catalyst, and driver of a modernized multilateralism,” He added.

    “I’m very pleased that when the world needed the Bank to step up, our shareholders responded with expanded resources and support for key reforms that made us quicker, more effective and more open,” Zoellick added.

    “The Bank is now strong, healthy and well positioned for new challenges, and so it is a natural time for me to move on and support new leadership.”

    Achievements

    Provided a record $247 billion of support in the key areas of infrastructure, the private sector, agriculture, trade finance, social safety nets, education, health, and the environment.

    The first general capital increase for the Bank in over 20 years, with over half the new capital from developing countries; and a record $90 billion raised for IDA, the World Bank’s fund for the poorest, against a very challenging backdrop of donor austerity.

    Putting Food First: Alerted the world to the forthcoming food crisis, and helped marshal new resources and tools to address it. World Bank agriculture lending increased to $6 billion per year.

    Created a new IFC (private sector) Asset Management Company to channel sovereign wealth funds and pension resources (to date $3 billion) to the private sector in Africa and other emerging markets.

    Zoellick said that through June 30 he will stay 100% focused on being Bank President and will continue to drive policy and programs at a heightened tempo.

    For example, in late February, he will help unveil a joint groundbreaking World Bank-China study on the future structure of China’s growth model, drawing lessons for other middle-income countries.

  • Boy Crashes Car in Attempt to Reach School Early

    A ten Year old boy only identified as Joshua crashed his father’s car this morning while attempting to reach school early. The father of the boy Bizimungu Samuel is a resident of Kabuga.

    He found his son had crashed his car into another vehicle early morning in attempt to get to school early.

    “I was afraid that If I get to school late the teachers will beat me, so I thought I could take daddy’s car, because I realized that If I crashed daddy’s car, I would not be beaten for that at school, so I preferred to go to school and tell the teachers that I was late because daddy had a car accident.” Said Joshua.

    Joshua’s routine is to take the bus to school every day, but since he was late this morning his father decided to drop him off instead. Bizimungu told his son to get in the car and wait for him to drive him to school.

    However, as Joshua waited for his father who was finishing getting ready suddenly heard a crash outside the family gate. He later found his car rammed into a neighbour’s car that is always parked outside their house.

    As Bizimungu ran to the car he realized what had happened he ran to check on his son and to his astonishment Joshua wasn’t in the car. There was no one person in the driver’s seat.

    After the initial shock and seeing that his son was nowhere to be found, Samuel apologized to his neighbour who was more curious about who was trying to drive the car in the first place then the damage to his car.

    The house boy finally confessed to seeing the little boy in the front seat of the car but did not think the boy would try anything.

    He said when he came to check on the boy he saw him getting into a bus and didn’t suspect he would have been responsible as it was routine that Joshua uses the bus.

    But when he saw the car accident he realized what had happened and confessed that he was afraid of owning up because he thought they would blame him and he would lose his job.

    When 10 year old Joshua came home and was asked to explain his actions.

  • Rafiki Releases New Version of “igipende” Song

    Rafiki, a Rwandan artist in the second season of the Guma Guma, has released his new hip version of one of “igipende” a favourite hit for his fans.
    One of the songs which may have propelled Rafiki to the limelight has been remixed with two other international stars.

    Rafiki had recently been in Kampala, Uganda where he met up with Ugandan artist Washington a famous Ugandan artist and Washington’s cousin also an Upcoming artist.

    The three artists agreed collaboration and produce a song together.

    Washington who had heard Rafiki’s song said he would like to make the song a little more upbeat, the results being “Idagonera” the title to Rafik’s new remix and collaboration.

    Rafiki also opened up to reporters, giving us a little insight into the life of the star’s private life.He has a wife and a son “Junior”..

  • EAC Vows to Respond to Impacts of Climate Change

    A three-day follow up meeting about Post-Durban Dialogue on climate change and agriculture held in November-December 2011 in Durban, South Africa, opened today at the Mt. Meru Hotel in Arusha, Tanzania.

    It is aimed at examining the outcome of the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP 17).

    The Dialogue, which has brought together climate change and agriculture experts from nine Eastern Africa countries of Burundi, DRC, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda is expected to focus on decisions of agriculture with a view to propose activities that would be considered under the agricultural work programme of Parties (members of UNFCCC).

    Addressing the opening session, Tanzania’s Minister for Agriculture Hon. Prof. Jumanne Abdallah Maghembe informed the experts that Governments in the region and other Regional Economic Communities were fully committed to respond to the impacts of climate change collectively through policy and practical measures since the impacts had no boundaries.

    Prof. Abdallah, who was represented by the Director General of Tropical Pesticides Research Institute (TPRI) Epiphania Kimaro, recognized the technical support that COMESA and her partners were providing to ensure developing countries fully benefit from the negotiations through providing necessary skills and information to the technical experts and negotiators to effectively negotiate and argue the case for Africa.

    She added that the experts dialogue is an important opportunity for member States to reflect on the outcome of the Conference with the aim of preparing how to implement specific decisions that are of priority to the region and specifically to identify key issues relating to agriculture with a view to prepare a common position for consideration by the subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technical Advice (SBSTA) during its 36th Session schedule for May 2012.

    The EAC Deputy Secretary General in charge of Productive and Social Sector Mr. Jean Claude Nsengiyumva disclosed to the participants that EAC had already considered the outcome of the COP17 during the Extra-Ordinary Meeting of the Sectoral Council on Environment and Natural Resources that was held on 1 to 3 February 2012 in Arusha.

    Nsengiyumva, who was represented by EAC Climate Change Coordinator Mr. Brian Otiende informed the meeting that EAC was in the process of implementing three critical policy documents approved by the EAC Heads of State Summit in April 2011 namely; the EAC Climate Policy (2011); the EAC Food Security Action Plan (2011-2015) and the Heads of States Summit Declaration on Food Security and Climate Change.

    He reiterated that the EAC, COMESA and other strategic partners were committed to working with stakeholders in Eastern Africa with a view to developing a common position on issues related to agriculture for consideration by SBSTA and other bodies of the COP.

    The Dialogue is being organized jointly by the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the East African Community, (EAC) in collaboration with Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS-EA), a global programme of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
