  • Museums harbor useful historical lessons

This year’s “cultural tourism” event scheduled on 14 June at Rukari former king’s house will have a variety of cultural activities compared to previous ceremonies. The event is part of a campaign meant to revive the country’s heritage.

Indeed, the awareness led by the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda (INMR) also seeks to increase the number of museums as well as attract tourists. However locals are also encouraged to visit museums in order to learn more about the culture.

Alphonse Umulisa, the head of INMR stressed that some cultural practices were at a risk of becoming extinct if people ignored their lessons. In this respect, the institution has adopted 20 traditional cattle known as “Inyambo “. The latter was used to entertain the king during ceremonies a fact that makes it a historical creature. “A cow plays a big role in our culture since it symbolizes partnership, collaboration as well as togetherness,” Umulisa remarked.

He further pointed out that cattle were also used as wealth especially in paying dowry. In addition Inyambo’s characters are widely used in traditional dances commonly seen in the stretching of arms which reflects the cow’s horns.

Apart from Inyambo, traditional handcrafts will also be showcased including cultural outfits. Mashirika a renowned drama group is expected to the grace the event. Later on guests will be served Urwagwa a local brew made from ripe bananas. Other traditional beverages include Ikigaje brewed from fermented millet or sorghum.

In order to enhance the awareness Umulisa noted that he was in talks with several mayors in order to establish more museums in districts which have historical backgrounds or have ancient materials.

  • Rwanda recommends cancellation of genocide transfer cases to France

The government has suggested the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) to cancel the transfer of two cases to France for trial involving Father Wenceslas Munyeshyaka and ex-governor Laurent Bucyibaruta, if their prosecutions would continue to be delayed.

Rwanda Representative to the UN, Eugène-Richard Gasana on Monday “urged the Council to obtain an official report on the status of prosecutions of the two cases transferred to France for trial in 2007”, according to the UN Department of Public Information.

He stated that “the Tribunal has the duty to revoke those referrals if they continued to delay prosecution of Father Wenceslas Munyeshyaka and Laurent Bucyibaruta”.

In his response the ICTR Prosecutor Hassan Bubacar Jallow “assured Gasana that there were extensive arrangements to monitor the two cases being tried in France”.

“Both cases were now before an investigating judge and the monitoring arrangements would continue to provide information on their status,” he said in the statement, adding that during his recent trip to Europe he had received assurance from French authorities of their effective procedure in connection with the cases.

In November 2007, the ICTR referred to France the cases of Munyeshyaka, a Priest at the Holy Family Parish in Kigali between 1992 and 1994 and that of Bucyibaruta, former Governor of Gikongoro prefecture and the prosecution appointed monitors to observe and report on progress made in investigations and prosecution.

Father Munyeshyaka, who lives in exile in Gisors (North-west of France) since 2001, is accused by ICTR prosecutor of killing and raping several persons and handing over dozens of Tutsis to the Interahamwe militiamen, who then killed them. In Rwanda, Father Wenceslas was sentenced in 2006, in absentia, to life in jail.

Bucyibaruta lives near Troyes (North-east of France). The ICTR alleges that he incited the Interahamwe to perpetrate the genocide in Gikongoro (South of Rwanda).

Naming the team, Tardy said, “The team was determined after a week-long of intensive training here in Taos. Players named have been able to impress and worked out hard for them to be in final team in several of the training camps that we have held. “I have no doubt in every member who has made it to the final team and by the time we leave Taos, the team will be in good shape to stage a successful World Cup debut in Mexico,” added Tardy.

Among the players who were named, only three players (Arsenal U16 striker Alfred Mugabo, Express FC midfielder Farouk Saifi Ruhinda and SEC academy defender Eugene Habyarimana) earned their maiden call to the national team while the rest had previously played for Rwanda in international friendly matches and Africa U17 Championships.

We thought the weather would hinder our preparations but thanks to God because we have adapted to the high-altitude training and our performance in both the training and friendly matches promises big for our country and enthusiasts in the upcoming World Cup,” said Usengimana.

The team has not only acclimatized with the weather but they have even adapted to both the meals offered by Sagebrush hotel and supporting care from Sports Alliance CEO Joel Israel who has availed everything either at the hotel or at the playing field to make the team comfortable.

For starters, the Junior Wasps have so far won two friendly matches against Rio Vista U19 3-1 and Classic Gladiators 3-0. Enroute to Taos, Rwanda U17 started preparations for the World Cup in February this year, one month after the Africa U17 Championship concluded in Kigali.
