  • UK company to manage Nyungwe Forest

A UK based forest company; New Forests Company (NFC) has taken over the management of Nyungwe forest buffer zone, with plans to build a diverse, modern, valuable wood products industry.

The agreement was signed yesterday July 19, between the government represented by MINERENA, RDB and NFC itself.

The company’s CEO, Julian Ozanne told Igihe.com that NFC company intends to invest in a series of manufacturing industries to produce wood products for the growing construction sector.

Ozanne also commented on the likely additional investments; “if we further enter agreements with the government, our company also hopes to generate woody bio-mass electricity for the national grid and other bio-energy products.”

Speaking after the signing of an agreement, MINERENA’s Minister Stanislas Kamanzi recommended the venture, emphasizing that the year 2011 having been declared a year of forests, has seen tremendous advocacy for the conservation of forests.

He also said the project would create job opportunities to communities around the area. “Assuming all activities are realized, this scheme alone will create more than 1,200 jobs over the next five years.” Kamanzi said.

RDB’s Chief Operating Officer Clare Akamanzi said, “NFC hopes to enter into additional agreements with the government and should all this be concluded, the company expects the total investment in the project to reach up to US.$60M in the next few years. This is a clear indication that Rwanda is continuously being trusted by investors and we hope more of them can realize country’s full potential.”

The company expects to begin harvesting in October 2012; it says it is committed to replanting all harvested areas with improved tree species.

  • Check on your abnormal weight

    By:Dianah Mutimura

Habyarimana Anastase, a doctor with the American society and China Green World International in Rwanda says that when a person gets to know that he or she has too much weight the first step is indulging in vigorous physical exercises to minimise the weight.

He adds that it’s better when a person wants to reduce on weight to first consult the doctor for the advice on how to reduce weight instead of using his or her own methods that might have side effects on one’s health.

The doctor further explains that, “you can do exercises thinking that the weight is reducing yet you are adding more because there wasn’t any advice from the doctor to describe for you what type of exercise that conducive for your health”

According to him the most important thing is that when a person knows that high weight can cause some diseases like debate, high blood pressure, and heart disease, he or she adjusts accordingly. This physiotherapist emphasizes that not all people who want to reduce their weight succeed as they wish.

“The weight that is caused by the food, more especially of animals, reducing it is very simple but there are others who increase weight through family inheritance which is not easy for that person to reduce weight apart from being strong and also reduce few weights.

Adelphine, one of the patient at Green World International in Nyabugogo said that after two months, she has been following the doctor’s prescriptions, she has lost 8kg over 80kg she had, which were not making her comfortable because the weight contrasted with her height.

“The doctor recommended me to do exercise of walking every day, drinking a lot of clean water at least 3 litters per day, and even to drink tea called “thé d’amaigrissement” to reduce on my fats in the body”. Adelphine explains.

She went on to say that if she acquires the size she wants, she will try her best to avoid what was causing her fatness because it kills her figure.

If your child is five years old, pay attention to the unexpected gain, and the body weight will slowly increase normally as he or she gradually gains maturity.

It’s in five year period that kids gain weight easily and it’s most common for kids from seven years to twelve years because a children’s weight increment may relate to their widened diet and appetite. Dr. Habyariman observes.

Fattiness is seen as a disease now days, where a number of people have huge weight and in developing countries like Rwanda, hospitals or clinics which are specialized in physiotherapist are rarely found where majority of the clinics are foreign clinics which even follow their foreign currency to treat people according to Dr. Habyarimana

Rwanda’s Parliament on Monday kicked out a lawmaker Ashinzwuwera Dumas Alexandre representing Prosperity and Solidarity Party (PSP) from the lower chamber of parliament, for what it termed “improper conduct”.

He is allegedly accused of attacking and fighting police officers that had visited his home to conduct investigations on March 30, that was looking into his allegedly assault to his brother.

The vice speaker of parliament Polisi Denis said that Ashinzwuwera who was until Monday a member of parliament, was involved in various illicit behaviors like assaulting on his brother, and resisting an arrest by security agencies at his home.

  • Prostitution growing with us

    By: Dianah Mutimura

Prostitution is illegal in Rwanda. However, a lot of factors are forcing young women into commercial sex to earn a living. There are also increasing cases of crossborder commercial sex in the region.

Although the government continues to provide alternative sources of income inform of loans to cooperatives of vulnerable groups, the factors that drag young women into prostitution haven’t reduced.

Igihe.com has since conducted a quick survey aimed at assessing the level of the problem of commercial sex in the Kigali city suburbs.

Claudine 22 (name changed for her safety) and her colleagues live in the same compound of small-roomed houses. This reporter chose to visit their compound with a male friend to cover-up as though he was a client intending to buy a sex service from them.

Our reporter says she remained at a distance as the male friend engaged. They thought she was also looking for a fellow female for sex. They insulted her demanding they would only collaborate if she gave them Frw 2000. Our reporter yielded to their demands.

Claudine is a mother of two children and is involved in commercial sex but she says that there is nothing good in being a prostitute.

She was kicked out of her parents’ home before she could graduate from high school, because she was pregnant yet she was under an organization where she run away and started her life as prostitute.

Claudine shared her life as a prostitute. She lives at Kanombe a suburb of Kigali city. Claudine lives with her two children. In a single-roomed poor house with no electricity. She sleeps on a 2-inch mattress placed on the floor. She pays monthly rent of 5000frw.

The fathers of Claudine’s two children do not give any help to her. Claudine has never seen the father of her second child she gave birth to while in her form four ever since she was expelled from school.

The other father to her other child is a married man she says cannot confront but instead she has opted for commercial sex to feed her children and survive.

Claudine reveals that she finds her customers at bars that have been in service for a while. She normally takes position at strategic spots especially at the bar counter.

She advises men who are not interested in services of commercial sex not to sit at the counter since it’s a spot aggressive sex workers prefer.

According to Claudine, sometimes a client can take a sex worker to the bathrooms and is paid between frw1000 and Frw3000 depending on the status of the sex worker.

She says national police have arrested her more than three times leaving her children in the house alone. This has kept Claudine and her colleagues in a constant chase game with the police. However, Claudine says she is aware of the laws against prostitution in the country.

“The police arrests us puts us in custody and the next day they release us to go back to our places and even caution us not return to prostitution. Unfortunately I cannot let my children die. I have to go back and play hide and seek with Police sometimes pretending to be a waitress at a bar”.

Claudine, admits that prostitution contributes highly to the spread of HIV. She narrates that her second child is a result of a pregnancy owed to a client.

She explains that there are high cases of unprotected sex among commercial sex workers. She also says that unprotected sex is charged higher than protected sex.

“When I learnt that I was pregnant. I was scared, took a HIV test, and found I was negative. However, I have since vowed never to have unprotected sex even if it reduced money I used to get”.

Claudine’s neighbours at the small compound where she lives gathered to express their complaints aganist prostitution in Rwanda saying the practice must be stopped. They stated that prostitution was not part of Rwanda’s path to development and, therefore, must stop.

Claudine supports that prostitution should be banned at all costs. She reveals that behind prostitution, there is illegal drugs business adding that her landlady who used to sell marijuana but stopped after being imprisoned twice.

On a similar note, Claudine revealed that there is a growing number of commercial hormosex workers. She says they operate around nightclubs including KBC, Serena hotel, Mille collinnes, Umubano hotel, lapalice nyandungu.

Similarly to Claudine, many young girls out there sell their bodies to earn a living where some claim that they are orphans, poor, and other others have high libido where one man cannot satisfy them.

The above case is a drop in the ocean of several prostitution cases in urban centers of our country. More efforts from government and stakeholders are needed to help provide alternative sources of income to the young women involved in commercial sex despite being aware of the consequencies.

  • Rwandatel liquidates to pay creditors

The commercial court of Nyarugenge has finally ruled that Rwandatel should liquidate its assets in order to pay debts amounting to US$ 88.9 million.

Creditors have been authorized to submit their claims to the company not later than 4th august.

Richard Mugisha the company’s interim administrator noted that he was optimistic that selling the assets would make the situation better.
    rwandatel-2.jpg

Rwandatel assets are valued at approximately US$50 million though the assessment process is still underway. “I believe we have stable equipments which would attract investors speedily,” he remarked.

Once the assessment is complete, the company aims to advertise its assets in August. Mugisha further pointed out that the bid will be open. This means that even local telecommunication companies would be allowed to give their offers.

“We have decided to sell our assets in form of a package which will enable us continue with our day to day activities without any obstruction,” he remarked.

Mugisha advised the court to liquidate the company since in the recent months he has headed the company it has not shown progress of growth.

The liquidation of Rwandatel is in Rwanda’s full compliance with the UN Security Council resolution to freeze assets belonging to Libyas Col. Muammar Gadaffi’s and his cronies’ assets and imposing travel bans.

The luxury laico Hotel in Kigali was also frozen. The hotel will return to its former name Umubano Hotel and Soprotel, a private company will take over the hotel management.

The United Nations Security Council earlier this year unanimously adopted a resolution that could put Muammar Gaddafi and his family in the dock of an international court for crimes against the Libyan people.

In a 15-0 vote, the council ordered all UN member states to freeze the assets of the Libyan leader, his daughter and four of his sons. They and another 10 key members of the regime were banned from travelling outside the country.

  • Rwanda rejects UN Human Rights recommendations

The government of Rwanda has officially rejected recommendations by the UN human rights council arguing that that they are either full of misconceptions or unfit for Rwanda’s progress.

This was announced today by the Minister of Justice Tharcisse Karugarama.
He was reacting to a report on the Universal Periodic Review that has recommendations for the country to improve its human rights, yet out of the 73 suggestions, Rwanda has rejected 6 of them.

The rejected recommendations appear to be out of Rwanda’s context, “some recommendations are a mockery to our human rights progress; I agree that not all is roses but they shouldn’t forget that a lot is being done to improve the situation”.

Karugarama wondered how the UN human rights council would urge Rwanda to deal with militias recruiting children which was untrue even the citizens themselves would confess there are no militia groups in the country.

In another recommendation, Rwanda is discouraged from recruiting underage people in the military. Minister Karugarama says that this allegation was also incorrect compared to the army’s enrollment procedure in which only those 18 and above are allowed.

“I wonder where they get this wrong information but I highly suspect they interview the country’s enemies who have fled the country on counts of various crimes and would criticize Rwanda as a way to cover up for their mistakes.

“It is also similar comments from the same renegades that incite that there’s arbitrary arrest yet according to laws one is taken to court after being jailed for not more than 72 hours,” he remarked.

On this note the chairperson of the National Human Rights commission Sylvia Zainabu rectified that some policemen that jail people against the law, their mistakes shouldn’t be attributed to the government. Those involved are always apprehended.

In another false recommendation, it is claimed that minority religions should be allowed to practice their faith. However, Karugarama stresses that no religion has been denied their right to operate in the country once they have fulfilled all the requirements.

In an accusation, Rwanda is advised not to discriminate against marginalized people (Abatwa). However, government rejects the accusation saying the Abatwa have a representative at the parliament and they are entitled to all resources just like any other citizen.

“Those who feel that they’ve been denied their rights can simply report the matter to the National Human Rights commission or the office of the ombudsman and justice will prevail,” Zainabu advised

The suggestions also demand that government respects the rights of indigenous people(Abatwa) which is contrary to Rwanda’s concept particularly on the fact that there’s no law that promotes discrimination.

“This is just a misconception from other countries like Australia where the majority invaded the country from other parts of the world,” he remarked.

However, Rwanda scored high in several sectors such as the social economic sector, this is well reflected in infrastructure, education, health, security amongst others.

Currently the government has approved the remaining 67 recommendations of which some were being implemented even before Rwanda delivered its human rights report to the UN in Geneva.

In this respect, Karugarma urged locals not to be incited by international reports since some are written without the right context of the country while others are false hoods to tarnish the stable leadership Rwandans are enjoying now.

“In the past we have suffered a lot and no one would teach us better how to enhance human rights, security for instance is enjoyed by all now, free education too not forgetting food really this are basics we wouldn’t have got in previous regimes.”

  • Hip hop star Kingston won’t perform on 30th

    By: Dianah Mutimura

Sean Kingston fans will have to wait until September to see the artist perform in Rwanda.

    kinz.jpg

The Kigali concert that was slated for 30th this month has been extended to 17th September 2011. The extension will enable the Hip-hop star recover from injuries he sustained in a jet skiing accident at the end of May.

The change of date has been announced by the concert organizers-Bralirwa. Sean Kingston suffered a neck trauma injury during the Jet Ski crash. Bralirwa says they have a letter from the star’s doctor verifying the reason why they should change the date for the star to recover from the trauma.

However, the preparations are still going on to declare the winner of guma guma super star on 30th of this month as the manager of East African promoters Joseph Mushyoma told Igihe.com yesterday.

“Due to the changes that have come up, this will not change the announcement of the guma guma super star finalist on 30th where we have organized an eye-catching concert at Amahoro stadium as it was mentioned before.

“The top ten artists that were competed from the start will perform on that day and the winner will be announced where the prize is still standing of Frw6million” Joseph explains.

Joseph added that the winner will go to US in the middle of August to record a song with Sean Kingston where he will come back with him and perform together on 17th September this year.

  • Kicukiro residents angry at EWSA

In the past two months, residents of Kicukiro have been fetching water at past midnight because during day the taps are dry.

However, the Energy Water And Sanitation Authority (EWASA) denies any knowledge about the problem because to them, no complaints have been submitted at their major branches situated in the district.

In the real sense this sounds as if someone has been sleeping on their job, because EWASA’s uninformed director James Sano boasts that EWASA is extending its pipelines due to the rise in water levels.

Despite Sano’s comment, affected residents seem not satisfied. Angry Patricia Uwabaho aged 59 from Isangano cell stresses that she has been waking up late at night to fetch water for weeks.

Uwabaho seemingly ill doesn’t have a house help and stays with her grandchildren who are still minors to assist her. “Just imagine we stay alert during the night as if we’re waiting for robbers, it’s really annoying because sometimes we fail to get water after a sleepless night,” she remarked.

In this situation, residents don’t have a choice but to stay awake the whole night since during the day water is scarce. “In case one does a mistake and is taken away by slumber the following day is often a bizarre and among the consequences is that they either buy the water which is extremely costly or have to travel for miles to fetch water from streams,” she remarked.

However, many residents have acquired water storage containers yet the vulnerable can’t afford the giant tanks for instance. So far Sano has assured the residents of a quick response.

  • NGO trains spouses on Family Nutrition

    By Supreetha Gubbala

Aspire, a new local NGO has started a family health and nutrition education program aimed at assisting illiterate and semi-illiterate women in addressing their basic family constraints, Igihe.com has established.

In an event held on Sunday at their headquarters in Kigali, Aspire in partnership with Medical Students’ Association of Rwanda (MEDSAR) instilled what was termed: “Body Mass Index” to women and a number of their spouses on health nutrition for their families.

The organizations Founding Director, Ms. Peace Ruzage revealed that the Aspire program was founded in 2007 after she had seen an idle and frustrated group of women in her neighborhood.

“It really started as community outreach, because the women neighbours would gather on my veranda and I would hear them arguing in desperation about their family problems and that’s when I started interacting with them”. She added that the number grew and she decided it was high time they could do something to overcome their constraints.

After much discussion with her neighbors Ruzage says she discovered that the women were bored and marginalized from society due to lack of education and basic training to help them shape their destiny.

“Most of the women were illiterate, unskilled widows and single mothers with many children” she passionately stressed explaining they started teaching them simple vocational skills like reading and writing.

Later in 2009 she realized the need to do something more formalized by getting partners and register the NGO with government and international partners assistance in helping the vulnerable households.

Ruzage pointed out that every year Aspire adopts 100 women in Kigali into its twelve month training program, which currently has three hundred graduates and 175 currently still enrolled in the basic education focusing family health nutrition.

She emphasized that the organization strongly makes sure that women passon these skills to their children and communities. She further stressed that without the men also taking part, there exist barriers to any sustainable changes.

“Before they graduate we evaluate their progress and when we are doing the evaluations the women tell us: “you talk to us, but you are only talking to only one side. Men are still decision-makers in households be it family planning, be it nutrition because if it is the man who is giving money for food, they must also decide what to eat.” She clarified adding: “This is the first time we are talking to men as an organization.

“ We hope to continue the program at least for two Sunday’s a month.”

More often, health organizations focus on educating the women in households as they are seen traditionally as caregivers. However, says Aspire and MEDSAR have partnered up to successfully create a dramatically different approach to including men in addressing household challenges faced.

Jean Baptiste Habiyambere, the President of MEDSAR and a fourth year medical student told Igihe that it is part of their mission to serve the Rwandan people.

“I was called by the coordinator and we met and discussed how we can be involved in their health related issues.

“That is how we planned for these activities where we can screen for some diseases that affect spouses, teach them about various health issues like family planning, reproductive health, and infectious diseases.” He observed adding that on Sunday they were screening for their Body Mass Index, where the results can indicate their cardiovascular health and risk for developing diabetes.

“But the main purpose today is to get the men here and teach them about nutrition for their families and teaching women while the men remain uneducated is useless.”

The event attracted dozens of men who commented after their nutrition lesson that they able to know much better what their wives had been talking about and the importance of diet to their own health.

  • Government inducts Refugees on Rwanda’s Progress

    By: Supreetha Guballa

The Ministry of Disaster preparedness and Refugees has started a week long “Come and See Visit” for three Rwandan Refugees who are living in Lubumbashi, DRC.

The purpose of the visit is to allow the refugees to come back to Rwanda for themselves, assess the situation and choose to return voluntarily.

The refugees chosen for the visit were Methode Umimana, 17 years, Innocent Hategekimana, 43years and Jean Basco Zumushukuru 18years along with Gaitrie Ammersing, UNHCR Protection Officer .

Also in the delegation were CNR Representative Theresa Prado from DRC and the ministry official Gaspard Murekezi who will be traveling with the regugees throughout the various provinces of Rwanda to experience what it is like now.

This morning the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Antoine Ruvebana welcomed the refugees, telling them: “The current stage of development Rwanda is on is a result of the work of all Rwandans, not an individual effort, what we need now more than ever is to work together. In order to do so, we need our fellow Rwandans in refugee camps to return”

He explained to them all the changes that have occurred while they were refugees, especially in education sector urged them to avoid the propaganda outside of Rwanda, see for themselves so that repatriation occurs out of individual desire.

Out of the three refugees that were chosen, only one had lived in Rwanda for a long time but he appreciated the changes he saw upon re-entry.

“When we entered the country no one asked for our identity, so we felt comfortable.” He said adding that the only problem is that many still believed Rwandan refugees coming from the Congo now were working for FDLR, and many refugees in DR Congo were stigmatized, although this is not the case for them.

Both Umimana and Zumushukuru, revealed they never really knew Rwanda, as they left when they were still infants. Zumushukuru said: “I was always curious about the country and its people, because I did not know what it was like here.”

UNHCR Representative Ammersing assured the refugees that the UNHCR was indeed there to assist them in understanding how Rwanda has changed and what their possibilities of life here are.

The group will now be headed to Butare to visit the Nyaruguru district, visit family there and various projects that are taking place there.

Tomorrow they are scheduled to go to Cyanguga and Rusizi, followed by a visit to the refugee transit center at Nyagatare, Gisenyi, and Rubavu.

They are expected to be shown all the socio-economic improvement programs taking place in Rwanda that seem to give them positive impression of the country.
