  • Gaddaffi Son Free, Vows to Fight

The son of Libya’s embattled president whom the international media had generally reported to be under arrest and detention by Libyan rebels and more so confirmed by the International Criminal Court, has re-emerged as a free man amidst thousands of supporters in the Libyan Capital, Tripoli.

saif al Islam appeared in capital Tripoli greeting government Loyalists
Saif al-Islam previously seen as successor to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi is serving as prime minister in his father’s government.

Saif visited the Tripoli hotel where foreign journalists are staying to declare that the government was winning the battle against the rebels.

Saif whose beard has overgrown as opposed to his clean shaven trademark image, appeared in jubilant mood flashing the V for victory sign. He later took journalists to his father’s Bab al-Aziziyah stronghold. Television footage
showed Saif smiling, waving and shaking hands with supporters.

“We broke the back of the rebels. It was a trap. We gave them a hard time, so we are winning,” Saif said.

“Take up arms today, take up arms today,” Saif told loyalists waiting to be given weapons. “Inshallah (God willing) we will attack the rats today,” he said to cheers.

In an audio broadcast on Sunday on state TV, Gaddafi said he would stay in Tripoli “until the end.” There has been speculation, however, he might seek refuge in his home region around Sirte, or abroad.

In a sign Gaddafi allies were still determined to fight, NATO said government forces fired three Scud-type missiles from the area of Sirte toward the rebel-held city of Misrata.

Bab al-Aziziyah, a huge complex where some believe Gaddafi might be hiding, was the focal point of fighting in Tripoli.

“I don’t imagine the Bab al-Aziziyah compound will fall easily and I imagine there will be a fierce fight,” Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, spokesman for the rebel National Transitional Council, said in an interview aired by Al-Jazeera.

Emerging reports from the battle front indicate that Libyan rebels have early today clashed with an army convoy coming from the city of Sirte, killing tens of Gaddafi’s troops. The reports have not said the exact place where the clash has happened. Sirte was heavily bombed by NATO just before rebel forces moved into Tripoli.

  • US Delegates Strengthen Bilateral ties with Rwanda

A high power delegation of United States including three Congressmen said they were impressed by Rwanda’s socio-economic development within just one decade after the catastrophic inhumane mayhem of 1994.

The delegation of ten Americans led by Jim McDermott from Washington DC held closed meeting with the Premier Bernard Makuaza at his office in Kimihurura.

Talking to journalists after their discussions with the Premier Senator McDermott said Rwanda had made invaluable progress after the 1994 genocide.

“Our visit is in form of learning tour on behalf of CARE International to review its programs together with those supported by the US government within the healthcare sector.

He further told the press that their discussions with the prime Minister were mainly about strengthening the mutual relations existing between Rwanda and the US government.

“We are very impressed by the recovery this country has shown in the last 17 years, after the Genocide and being able to bring about the reconciliation process, improve education, health programs, among other activities.”

  • ‘Insigamigani’, Rwanda’s Source of Wisdom, Treasures

Patriotism and heroism can be seen naturally as appropriate expression of attachment to one’s country from which he/she was born and raised and of gratitude for the benefits of life on its soil, among its people, and under its laws.

They might all be decently mandated and in some senses should bear or be influenced by different ethical aspects within. Different philosophers and writers have tried to express their views on morality nationalistically.

Rodrigue Rwirahira who is pursuing a master’s degree of arts in literature at Kenya’s Kenyatta University gives his analysis on the relevance of Isingamigani (a combination of proverbs and narratives) to the modern world.

He starts by referring his idea to some of renowned scholars like Primoratz Igor, who indicated that there is a major tradition in moral philosophy which understands morality as essentially universal and impartial, and seems to rule out local, partial attachment and loyalty.

The center of morality to him is when love of one’s own country characteristically goes together with dislike of and hostility towards other countries.

Another writer Drisko.G associated morality as determination to work for the better of one’s country. He asserted that citizens in order to be effective they need to act from respect for the common good. They need to be willing to deliberate about the nature of the public good and how to achieve it.

They also need to possess compassion, ethical commitment, social responsibility, a sense of interdependence among people and between people and their environment.

Miller Richard a scholar too completes Drisko by arguing that commitment to these principles expresses the desire to be worthy of the trust of all those who respect one’s own autonomy while insisting on respect for their own autonomy.

No doubt, much more is required for the height of virtue. He expresses it better by saying that overriding desire of this kind at least makes someone a morally responsible person, a person who avoids wrongdoing if her acts are faithful to her goals.

Bottom line is, the above insights on morality as far as Rwanda is concerned are farfetched and cannot be limited to the obvious virtual aspects, to include respect, will, love and care or any other typical positive code of conduct to observe as a citizen.

However, to add to the former aspects of morality, the insights are likely to relate, if not to say completely related and extensively manifested in Insigamigani narratives.

Referring to the first five proverbial narratives in below, they intend to pull out various positive behaviors and intentions that might have depicted by the authors. For example in the first proverb “What is followed by men is finally attained” we are being advised on the idea of solidarity and unity in the community.

The hunters together with farmers and cattle keepers stood together and overcame a threat that would cause harm to their activities and families, the unity is again highlighted when it comes to the sharing of meats.

They all understood the importance of sharing equally fruits of collective efforts. We are also advised on the idea of faith and trust, were different women were being told not to underestimate their respective husbands when it comes to their particular responsibilities.

In the second proverb “Rumors ended up in Gishike” the narrator accentuated how hatred, jealousy, and irrelevant conspiracies are very sensitive to society and should not be offered a space.

This was manifested when people suspected and accused Rugereka over the death of King Mutara Rwogera. It was not true and should not have caused disunity between Rwandese people and Abagereka.

However, he stresses the idea of self determination and altruism, when it comes to fulfill a given assignment. Again, this is shown when Gashambayita was sent to supply ammunitions to the frontline fighters.

In the third proverb “He reaches Yihande horizons” the narrator highlighted different inappropriate behaviors which include once again improper conspiracies, brutality, disrespect and egoism. Because all these drove the King Ruganzu Bwimba into a war which he could not have fought, he lost his life and Rwanda lost his king earlier.

However, the speaker acknowledges again the idea of maturity and fair judgment, where he described the young King Cyirima Rugwe as immature royally but yet he managed to deliver a fair judgment after a discussion over a killed antelope and punished those failed to abide by the rules wars.

In the fourth proverb “Words attain Ndabaga‟s phase” or “Things attain Ndabaga‟s phase” the speaker talk about patience and extreme commitment. Patience is portrayed in the character of Ndabaga’s mother, the wife to Nyamutezi who had gone into a longtime battle camp.

Ndabaga’s love to her family and country generated an extreme commitment to go beyond her femininity and train herself male’s tasks and she managed to get his father back home and the king to regulate a new rule which would not keep older people at the battle camps.

The fifth proverb “Not everything fine is entirely perfect” the narrator condemns strictly manners of impunity, done by the two royal characters King Yuhi Mazimpaka and his son Cyirima Rujugira over Kalira’s husband and brother.

He again exposes bad effects of jealousy as they can result into unreasonable and atrocious killings, like what Mazimpaka did to his son Musigwa. The narrator however, approves subjective manners from Kalira which included love and care for everyone, her love and care made her exceptional and center of every attraction.

The speaker values her love to Rwanda which became the reason of her heroic death. The narrator furthermore, emphasizes the idea of respect and sympathy. Respect is represented from the people’ loyalty to the king, and the king’s one to his people, there is a mutual understanding for a proper orientation of matters.

Finally, the sympathy is evidenced when Cyirima Rujugira realized that irrespective of the ruling laws a human being’s life should be valued first.

Additionally, in the following five last proverbs the narrator highly demonstrates the idea of self-sacrifice, determination, flexibility and integrity as manners that can help people to enhance communitarianism for a prosper future in a country.

This for example is shown in the proverb “He is not a man, but a strong tree” where the narrator stresses the valor of the legend Ruganzu Ndoli who revived the country after it vanished for 11 years, liberating a country and expanding it to far ends horizons demanded a legendary spirit and bravely.

The speaker admits the idea of creativity and innovation that moved Ruganzu to come up with new techniques in the process of saving his loved country.

Reviving the country was not only a substantial goal of Ruganzu, also was the idea of reunification of people after a long time of division. Ruganzu is a role model of different successor kings and leader of Rwanda.

In the proverb “Keep your food, if you don’t know the story at Fumbwe” the idea of unreasonable extensional and occupational warfare had been looked down upon, since it presents and bears no other importance other than imperialism and selfish domination.

This is shown on how Bunyoro community fought Rwanda just to overtake it, they called on for an extra support from neighboring dynasties. However, the speaker values the importance fighting a war under practical and plausible impacts which might be targeting the welfare of the community, preservation of dignity and integrity and sovereignty of the country.

It has been practically illustrated when the king Mibambwe Sekarongoro Mutabazi, instead of fighting with Bunyabungo community, who had initially offered them a refuge, over a dead bull issue decided to fight Bunyoro and get back the country for Rwandese.

In the proverb “he shot the target” we are being advised on the two main behavioral conducts, one which is to be ambitious and achieve your goals effectively; secondly as to value and respect everyone whether young or older, strong or weak and man or woman.

On the idea of ambition and achieve goals efficiently, the speaker exposes us with a wish from Kazenga, on which the former had to work hard to be able to achieve it.

The speaker condemns the manner of Kimenyi a king of Gisaka who despised Kazenga as too young to compete with him, his underestimating behaviours made him definitely fail and humiliated in front of his people. On the other hand Kazenga won, his rewards accomplished his wishes and made him realize his dreams.

In the proverbs “Measure your beehive to Bugegera‟s one” the narrator once again speaks to us about the ideas of efficiency and a positive vision. We are told of how a certain Bugegera, a poor, handicapped and hopeless servant of a very famous rich man Mirenge, achieved his vision of producing honey, managed to sustain his life and even become richer than his former master, after he and his wife cooperatively managed to draw people’s attention peacefully and got a help from them.

Mutual and cultural socio-interaction helped them efficiently to work hard and had their dreams realized. The speaker calls for a harmonious living and mutual support in the society.

Finally, the last proverb “The venue is at Huro”, the narrator, additionally, disassociates himself with the idea of longtime jealous, and choose to stress the habit of common sociability and a recognizance of friendliness.

This is shown when Yuhi Mazimpaka sent to death three territorial chiefs and almost three families as a result of long term conflicts over tactless accusations.

He portrays Muberamfura, the former salt supplier to the late chiefs, as person who acknowledges love and care once given to reproduce it back, when he saved the life of the survived brothers to the late chiefs.

“If this is correct, we have reason to develop and exercise a special concern for the moral identity and integrity of our country. By doing so, we will be attending to an important aspect of our own moral identity and integrity,” Rwirahira concludes.

  • Tailors Disagree,Fight Over Voting

Extreme disagrements that resulted into a fight marred the annual general meeting at Alpha Palace hotel held by tailors operating under an umbrella association COTRA .

The tailors disagreed on the voting process aimed at choosing new association executives. The meeting was called off and postponed as a means of easing tension.

Although members of the association accuse the incumbent management of poor performance, tailors disagreed mostly on candidates to be voted. Majority want the old executives to be replaced however, outgoing leaders seem hesitant.

According to COTRA voting process the candidates are required to move out of the room as they are voted. However, some members didn’t trust the vote casting process criticizing it as fishy.

One of the candidates Jean Paul Binama who seemed to have the majority of suppoters was quick to point out how unlucky his day went.

“You see the old leaders don’t want to leave the executive and they made it clear when they designed unfair voting process which my supporters didn’t like and were forced to fight due to anger,” he explained.

“I have always had worries that the outgoing team wanted to favor some of their friends, I wonder why some people jealous of each other and they don’t want to see their colleague progressing,” he argued.

Rugero paulin the outgoing president of the association admitted that there were some disagremments which he didnt want to disclose.

“I dont want to say anything now but what I i can assure you is that we’re going to have an organaised election next Monday,” he remarked.

The Alpha Palace hotel management at some point had to intervene in order to calm the situation since the fracas was feared to vandalize some of the hotel’s propety.

  • ‘Never joke with Value of Citizens,Nation’—Kagame

“Personally I can’t reach any achievement without building on your activities and never joke with the value of the citizens and for the country”.
    itorero1-ba033.jpg
This was mentioned by President Kagame during an informal civic education program closure event, of the national sectoral Executive Secretaries totaling 416 and some others in charge of Good Governance at the district level totaling 30.

The event was named Isonga held at Amahoro Stadium.

The President challenged the trainees that have completed the program to work on the truth and also use extra ordinary powers to reach positive achievements.

President Kagame also said that, the country like Rwanda needs many people with positive ideas to fight for the poor background.

Kagame urged to them that, as leaders if they work well on behalf of the public, no opposition person will get involved to change their mindset and causing insecurity in the country.

The president added that to reach such a sustainable development, one has to value the activities he is doing.
    itorero13-449fb.jpg
“The property of the citizens must be valued… and that’s what they want as citizens. If it’s a road to be constructed, it should not be done half way and then the rest of the money is pocketed,” the President pointed out.

In his closing remarks President challenged the Executive Secretaries noting, “you are here for a purpose.”
He added that whatever you leant during the training should be applicable for positive results.

The informal civic education program (Isonga) of the sectoral Executive Secretaries started on August 6, at Nkumba, Burera district in the Northern Province.

The training rotated on four governmental aspects; good governance, justice, social affairs and economy under a common vision, “One People, One Vision, One Nation, and One Team”

  • Tourism sector attracts more visitors in 2011

The Rwanda Development Board’s (RDB) Tourism and Conservation Division has released their latest data on the trends the tourism industry has taken this year.

It came as no surprise for informed observers, for instance, Trip Advisor, a global travel and tourism agency which saw an increase of over 650 percent in visits to Rwandan hotels and lodge reviews compared to 2010, considering the growing popularity of Rwanda as an eco-friendly tourism destination.

Rica Rwigamba, the head of tourism and conservation at RDB noted that, “Tourist arrivals in 2011, compared with the same period in 2010, were up by an astounding 27 percent already and by the end of the year, the country is expecting a new arrival and spending record”.

She attributed the trend to sustained marketing, the recognition around the world that Rwanda was not just paying lip service to conservation but actually working hard on re-forestation, maintaining biodiversity and the growing number of airlines and connections permitting visitors to fly in the country from around the world with often only one stop.

The national airliner, RwandAir has also been singled out for their exemplary performance in linking Kigali with not only the four East African cities but more recently to South Africa, West Africa – new destinations being Kinshasa, Brazzaville, and Libreville – and to Dubai, from where growing interest in investments and also for holidays has driven arrival numbers up.

Rwigamba further pointed out that easy online travel visa applications are another factor which enables some nationalities to consult the Rwandan government’s immigration website for specifics, which makes entry into the country easy.

What’s more, the launch of the Nyungwe National Park’s canopy walkway last year, high above the tropical rainforest, and efforts to make Gishwati Forest another national park have also resulted in positive media exposure, raising added interest by adventure tourism magazines, which in turn attract yet more visitors to the country.

    100_9112.jpg
Exclusively speaking to igihe.com Bamporiki noted,“I love artists more than anything else. For the case of Munyanshoza I can say, he raised me from 2,000 to the year of 2006 while staying with him in Kigali and I therefore I picked a lot of interest in him and that’s why I am giving him this crossbreed cow.”

Regarding the present given Mani Martin, Bamporiki said: “I was in Czech Republic schooling and I missed my homeland Rwanda. So I could hear Mani Martin’s songs that touched my heart.

“When I came back, I heard that he was going to launch his album and when I attended the launch, he sang a song titled ‘Isokoya Nilnukame’ authored by the Abadahogora choir from Gisenyi.

“This song really impressed me and enriched my heart and that’s why I gave her this cow in appreciation and to support his professional endeavours.”

On his part one of the happy recipients Mani Martin said: “When I had that I am given a cow during the launch of my album, I proved that my messages in my music had reached far into the hearts of the people.

“As a dream I had before, I just felt tears of joy coming from my eyes because of emotions and said thanks God for my talent.”

Overwhelmed with happiness Munyanshoza observed: “Culturally, giving a cow to someone is a sign of brotherhood. So I am really amazed of that and I will take it myself to my farm in Umutara”

Bamporiki said he wants to promote unity and love to the Rwandan community through the cultural activities and delivering messages of unity using his talent through films-related initiatives.

Bamporiki is an award-winning filmmaker, actor and poet. As young Rwandan artist, he has received national and international attention for his stories of hope, unity and reconciliation.

  • Rwanda Hails Appeal of Genocidaire in Finland

The appeals trial begins in Helsinki-Finland today, of an accused Rwandan genocide and other crimes against humanity described by prosecutors as “one of the most wanted perpetrators of the 1994 genocide that claimed over a million innocent Tutsis.
    genocider.jpg
Francois Bazaramba, 60 appearing in photo above, was convicted of acts of genocide in a lower court in June 2010 and sentenced to life imprisonment, although he was acquitted of several of the murder charges, AFP reports

Exclusively speaking to igihe.com, Prosecuter general Martin Ngoga said, “The process in Finland is an appeal on extradition proceedings we initiated years back. we shall extend our cooperation to the extent its needed and see what the court decision will be. we appreciate the fact every step taken is towards finality of the matter.”

The defendant was accused among other things of murdering or ordering the murder of numerous Tutsis in the province, including women and children.

He was further accused of systematically persecuting and displacing Tutsis and seizing their property, and for participating in and partly ordering an ethnic purge in Cyahinda which left 37,000 people who had sought shelter in a church dead.

According to the ruling of the district court of Itae-Uusimaa last year, “For those crimes, the only possible punishment is life imprisonment.”

Bazaramba was arrested by Finnish police in April 2007 on suspicion of taking part in the Rwandan genocide, in which at least 800,000 people, most of them ethnic Tutsis, were killed within only 100 days by Hutu extremists.

Finnish courts decided to try Bazaramba since the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, set up in Tanzania by the United Nations, was no longer accepting new cases.
