  • Respect Clients,Employees For Business Success

Top view restaurant is a popular diner in kigali city prefered by many due to mouthwatering cultural dishes served to clients.

At the entrance the warm welcome you get from a joyfull face of Madam Murekatete Marry, the proprietor of the restaurant commonly refered to as ‘Marry’s Joint’.
    photo0032.jpg
Igihe.com talked to an enterprising Murekatete Marry (pictured above) willing to share her experience as a business woman.

Murekatete is not a graduate of Hotel management However, she has practical experience of more than 25years in the restaurant business and believes that any amount of money can start a business as long as the initiator has vision, works hard, with self-confidence and trust in God, as she explains.

“I was a house wife before my husband died, but his absence taught me how to stand up as a mother and struggle for my children’s future since their father passed away”.

She says her first job in a restaurant was in Kampala in 1985. she worked for a short time and established her own restaurant with only 3,000 Ugandan shillings, by only preparing black tea(combination of water and tea leaves).

However, just after one month, she had managed to cook milk tea, katogo(local ugandan dish of banana, meat, gnut soup and veges), and afforded to employ one Waitress.

Murekatete adds that besides the basic qualities identified above, respect for customers, trustworthiness and determination are among crucial pillars for success in business ventures in particular and in daily life.

“I like my job and give it a big value and that is why I am where am,” she cheerfully stresses.

Some people open restaurants but within few months the business collapses because of poor management. Murekatete urges those people to always be there in time and give value to both employees and clients because they are partners without whose cooperation, the business collapses sooner than later.

“Like anywhere else, respect in business is very important because firing workers every after week does not make sense; they are human beings too who can make mistakes and be corrected instead of being fired,” She observes.

“ I came with four employees from Uganda but up to now am still working with them, not because they are my relatives but because I respect them and they do the same to me and our most regular customers trust and respect them too,” She accounts.

Doctors always advice people to eat local food like vegetables, sweet potatoes, cassava and so many others because they aren’t oily. thus protection aganist health infections resultant from oily foods.Top View Restaurant abides by doctors’ line because the restaurant only prepares cultural foods as main dishes.

Ms. Murekate believes that challenges cannot make one close the business but teach proprietors what to do next, as she gives her own practical example.

“In 1995 the place got burnt where the only thing I remained with was a Toyota pick-up which I had just bought, one chair, and a source pan, but that did not mean that I had to lose hope because after three months of renovation I started again.”

She says through her experience she learnt that respecting people and winning people’s trust helped her in strengthening her business which had gone down because of fire. She acquired a loan and paid later.

“I remember a man who gave me 8 tables with no discount just because his shop was opposite my restaurant, the same applies to the people in markets where I used to get all I want and paid later,” She jovially reveals.

Murekatete concludes by saying that satisfaction with what you have and whatever little you achieve is the main key to success in life and urges people to stop being idle by quoting the bible: “God said that He will bless whatever we have in our hands” and I believe any job is a blessing from God.

Some of the customers who had come for the breakfast appreciated the hard working spirit of murekatete because of what she prepares for them good hearted and care towards the customers.

Steven said 1994 after genocide when Marry opened the restaurant he has never went to any other restaurants.

“I always eat from Top View Restaurant because she does not fry her food and I am planning to stop eating from here only when I get married,” Explains Steven.

  • WFP Trims Food Rations for DRC Refugees in Rwanda

A shortage of funds has forced the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) to halve its food rations for tens of thousands of Congolese refugees in Rwanda effective from September1 reliable information indicates.

“This is a very difficult decision, but we currently do not have sufficient funds to provide the full recommended daily allowance of 2,100 kilocalories to more than 54,000 Congolese refugees in Rwanda,” said Abdoulaye Balde, WFP representative in Rwanda.

The lack of funds is particularly affecting the procurement of Super Cereal, a blend of maize, soy and micronutrients that is used in the programs designed for HIV patients and malnourished children.

The agency needs the urgent support of donors to cover a critical shortfall of 2,250 tons of assorted commodities valued at $3.8 million, which will enable it to continue to feed the refugees, who live in three camps in Rwanda, until the end of this year.

The agency warns that reduced nutritional support could lead to higher malnutrition rates among the refugee population, especially children, pregnant women and nursing mothers.

The DR Congo and Rwanda governments have in the recent past settled the political misunderstandings and jointly repatriated their 150,000 nationals taking refuge in each other’s country, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Officials from the two countries met in Goma, in North Kivu province in eastern DRC, in a UNHCR facilitated gathering to discuss the first steps to be taken.

Some 100,000 Rwandans that had been sheltering in eastern DRC since the 1994 genocide that claimed nearly one million lives returned to their home country and apparently the humanitarian conditions in both former archrival states are conducive for their citizens.

  • Fitch Predicts 18% Decline of Rwanda Debt by 2014

The latest Fitch Ratings assessment has simultaneously retained Rwanda’s Country Ceiling and its Short-term foreign currency rating at “B” the report released August 23 indicates.
    Rwanda's Finance Minister, John Rwangombwa
This basically means that Rwanda can be trusted to pay its debts if it’s to borrow from the global money markets and it also either ascertains to lenders that their money could be going to the right country.

In August 2010, the global agency upgraded Rwanda’s rating from ‘B-’ to ‘B’, indicating that the positive change had been due to uninterrupted period of strong growth that has more than doubled Rwanda’s income per head since 1994, lifting it to above that in some of its peers.

In the 2011 ratings, however, Fitch said there was no change from last year because of several factors.

“Downward pressure on the rating would arise from any threat to political stability,” said Fitch in a statement, suggesting that Rwanda must remain stable if it is to be trusted to be able to borrow and repay debt.

“The relatively smooth post-election period, despite criticism from opponents outside Rwanda, suggests the government should be stable in coming years.

“However, President Kagame’s lengthy rule and stability it has brought highlight the importance of an orderly succession after 2017,” said Fitch Ratings.

The agency also suggests Rwanda government should look seriously at adopting certain “structural improvements, such as increased economic diversification and lower reliance on international aid to be seen before further positive rating action is possible.”

However, Fitch predicts that government debt will decline further as a percentage of GDP to 18% by 2014 – down from 20 percent currently and forecasts the deficit could decline to 2.4% of GDP in 2011/12 and 0.3% in 2013/14 from an estimated 4.8% of GDP in 2010/11.

The agency states that: “After an expansionary fiscal policy in 2010/11, the 2011/12 budget plans fiscal tightening through higher tax receipts from improvements in VAT and income tax collection, and lower spending”.

It further highlighted that increasing the low tax rate of 14% of GDP is necessary to reduce reliance on international aid, which accounts for more 44% of total budget revenues.

Nevertheless, the assessment warns that: “If Rwanda’s economic prospects are to remain positive from now until 2017 and after, the country must remain stable like it has been under President Kagame’s administration.

The President has repeatedly assured the press and other critics that once his two term mandate expires in 2017, he will neither advocate for constitutional amendment nor accept any request to do so from the electorate.
