  • Sean Kingston and Mom to jet into Rwanda

    After a critical injury, the 21 year old and hip hop artist Sean Kingston who is scheduled to perform for the first time in Rwanda is coming with his mother.

    After crashing his watercraft into a Miami Beach bridge, Sean Kingston’s condition was even more serious according to physicians at first but his mother tried the best to be near the him.

    Kingston had a concert y September 6 in America and he is expected to take flight from America on September 15 next week land in Kampala -Uganda and perform with the Ashawo star Nigeria’s Mr. Flavor as Curtain raiser.

  • Amavubi Coach Resigns

    Sellas Tetteh a Ghanaian has resigned as Amavubi coach, FERWAFA said in a press release.

    This comes after few days the National team (Amavubi) was whipped five goals by the Elephants of Cote d’voire who have secured their ticket to the finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

    In the statement in his letter to FERWAFA, Tetteh pointed out that, “I have resigned as Amavubi head coach because of personal reasons,”
    He added,”I thank the Rwanda Football Federation, the ministry of youth, sports and culture and all for their support during my tenure.”

    Tetteh had signed a two-year contract in February last year to guide the Amavubi Stars through the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers but has ever since failed to make an impact as Rwanda have won only one of five matches in the competition.

    During his short stint, Tetteh managed to qualify Rwanda to the Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) in Sudan early this year and also guided the side to the quarterfinals of the CECAFA Challenge Cup held in Tanzania last year.

  • EALA , EAC Key to Regional Progress says Kagame

    President Paul Kagame said Tuesday while a addressing the first meeting of the fifth session of the second East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

    The regional legislators had converged at the parliamentary building where President Kagame pointed how useful it is in holding special debates that the community yells.

    He stressed that various organs of the continent can probably perform better while delivering as one and enhancing cooperation and collaboration with national institutions.

    The Head of State observed that for the past ten years, the people of East Africa have made significant strides in the development process of the region, and the working together of EALA and EAC has brought good changes to the development of the region.

    “I believe this assembly has the right to hold us accountable in implementing commitment so that we deliver in the meaningful way to our citizens and this will bring the community closer to citizens whom it is intended equally through the respected representatives.

    “I urge this assembly to collaborate more on mechanisms to initiate laws and enforce the expeditious implementation of the customs union and the common market protocol so that EAC citizens can benefit from them”, he added.

    He further urged East Africa business people, especially ordinary citizens to feel and find non tariff barriers and obstacles to run business across the region and the answer to this problem will be the establishment of a single customs union authority.

    Though the region experiences droughts, floods, and other natural disasters and food shortages due climate change and poor management of the environment, President Kagame urged the legislators to develop agricultural needs and management systems for food security in the region.

    “The need to develop agricultural policies and practices and land management systems that ensure food security in this region is most urgent.
    “As legislators, you have a critical role to play in this respect” he said

  • Country Cell Leaders get Laptops

    Rwanda’s e-governance promotion has gone down at the grassroots level where leaders of all the 2,148 cells across the country shall receive laptop computers under the patron ministry of local government.

    The promotion is effective during the 2011/12 fiscal year.

    The computers are aimed at assisting in the management of data among beneficiaries of social protection programs including Vision Umurenge Programme (VUP), Fund for the Support of Genocide Survivors (FARG), and One Cow per Family, Ubudehe and Mutuelle de Santé.

    Local Government minister, James Musoni, says the computers will help cells address challenges faced in delivering services to the population that include; speeding up of data collection and management.

    Musoni presented the first 25 laptops to cell leaders of Rubavu district emphasising the need for the promotion of ICT in local governance as envisioned in the country’s vision 2020 and NICI III.

    The minister confirmed that all the cells in the country would be issued with computers this fiscal year under implementation of local government capacity building strategy approved by the Cabinet in January 2011.

  • KigaliUp alive to the Land of 1000 Hills

    September 10, starting at noon at the lush Roundabout at Kimihurura Park in downtown will be crazy hot with the first annual KigaliUp Music Festival.

    The festival is the vision of Juno Award-winning Rwandan-Canadian artist Mighty Popo, who’s working with a team of arts industry veterans from Canada and Rwanda, voluntaries and Positive Productions.

    Exclusively speaking to Popo Murigande, one of the brains behind this also a Rwandan Musician based in Canada said,“We are doing this specifically to promote Rwandan artists through music and to entertain the Rwandan youth and interact as brothers and sisters.”

    KigaliUp will celebrate Africa’s deep, diverse musical traditions, including traditional music, blues, hip-hop, funk and reggae playing lively to the fans at the podium.

    There will be collaborations between Rwandan, African and international artists at the scene.

    Among other popular local artists are Kidumu, Kitoko, Miss Jojo, Shanel, Ibihame, Sophia Nzayisenga, Makanyaga Irangira, Kidz Voice, Mani Martin, Rafiki, King James, Urunana rw’abadatana, Natty Dread, and The Sisters will be available for the performance.

    They will perform alongside regional and international artist including Congolese,French, Rwandan artist Lokua Kanza, Brooklyn, USA, Canada’s blues sensation Shakura S’Aida, Canadian/Rwandan Juno award-winning hip hop artist Shad Kabango, world music artist Popo Murigande a.k.a Mighty Popo and Burundi/Canadian artists Thierry Kijanya and Nicolas Simbananiye among others.

    Like a miniature village for the weekend, KigaliUp will come live with 2 stages, a marketplace, beer garden and a family zone.

  • Nyarutarama Residents Want Lake Rehabilitated

    Plans are underway to put the manmade lake located in the zone of Kibiraro 11, Nyaruitarama Cell in Remera Sector, to generate revenues and provide employment opportunities to the people living in the area.

    The lake is commonly known as ‘Nyagahene’s lake’ located near Kigali Golf Club.

    Exclusively speaking to Rosette Kuzwa the leader of Kibiraro 11 zone, she confirmed ,“we recently wrote to the mayor of Gasabo district requesting for the release of the lake so that we can rehabilitate it and put it to use as agreed on behalf residents of this zone toget with the members of FPR here.

    She said the Gasabo District Mayor had promised to visit the place first and then give feedback but hasten to add that they have since not got a response from him.

    According to Kuzwa, if put to use, the lake will provide employment opportunities to over 150 people during the rehabilitation process, generate revenues through taxing visitors at the lake particularly those that will be using boats to sail over the water during their leisure time and from tourists who will be coming for sun bathing.

    Such revenues she emphasized are among others leading to the development of the area.

    Kuzwa added that after renovating the site, security will be instituted since the area is currently infested with idlers.

    Once the renovation project is approved, roads to the site will be tarmaced and fitted with road lights and security to ensure protection.

    Kuzwa says once that is done the zone is planning to solicit funds from rich people in the area and other local organizations like RDB, MTN, and TIGO to start the rehabilitation process that will take less than two months.

    Efforts to reach the Gasabo district mayor on the issue were futile. However, an official consulted at the district said the area is in the wetland and REMA should be consulted for environmental impact assessment (EIA).

    According to Innocent Gashugi a Senior Environmental Engineer at RDB that conducts EIA to the Investors, the previous lake investor at the site was stopped for encroaching on the wet land.

    “He was stopped because he had started to construct within 20 meters of the wetland which is not allowed.”

    According to Rwanda’s environment regulations on wetlands article no. 87 provides that no infrastructure should be built within 20meters of wetland area.

    Even though Nyarutarama citizens want to develop the lake, the whole site could have been given to the foreign investors for other activities.

    Bruno Rangira the City Council of Kigali communication officer says the area where this lake is located has been given to other investors to develop it.

    Rangira said that the whole area has 76 hectares of land that includes 26 hectares of dry area and 50 hectares of wetland.

  • Horizon Group to Showcase Achievements

    The Horizon group of companies is set to exhibit their infrastructural proficiency by highlighting and showcasing achievements in a Trade Fair Expo at Gikondo.

    The group CEO Eugene Haguma told Igihe.com that Horizon group wants to improve the country’s infrastructure by constructing more paved roads and at the same time promote the agriculture sector through pyrethrum planting.

    Haguma said Horizon the consortium of three subsidiary companies- Construction, Logistics and SOPYRWA will put emphasis on the growth of pyrethrum that will be turned into pesticides by SOPYRWA.

    “So far pyrethrum flowers have increased four folds from 209 metric tons two years ago to 700 metric tons in 2010-2011 seasons,” He revealed.

    The company’s consultant Franco Kanimba noted that Rwanda is among the top three countries with the special type of pyrethrum from Tanzania and Australia.

    Kanimba disclosed that dryers have been built for farmers and SOPYRWA has created a fund to help farmers acquire loans through Umurenge SACCO and direct loans to farmers in order to acquire basic needs like mattresses, iron sheets and medical insurance also known as mutuelle de santé .

    “We have also distributed 240 tons of organic fertilizer free of charge to farmers,” he boasted.

    The Horizon Construction Company on its part wants to improve infrastructure in the country and provide better housing facilities.

    According to Haguma, the company has reduced construction fees and now the price per kilometer was brought down from US$ 1million to US$ 0.6millon.

    He further noted that in the past one year the company has achieved a lot including 16.5 Km of paved roads in the city and several buildings were constructed, the Kigali Public Library and Rubavu border post among others.

    “We have the capacity to do more- this was the first local company to construct an Asphalt concrete road in the country,” he said adding: “Once you do quality work, be rest assured you can compete even with the giants like china who seem to be taking over the African market.”

    In order to improve its capacity, the company has been working with commercial banks that have invested US$ 5Million in new machines and trucks out of which 70% has been credits from local banks like ZIGAMA CSS and BCR while 30% has been financed from company cash flows.

    In terms of promoting descent houses in the country, Horizon Construction Company has set aside 30 hectares of land that will be used for a pilot project to construct low cost housing that will later be availed to eligible resident’s thorough mortgages.

    He said current smooth partnership with banks is expected to facilitate the process.

    The Horizon Logistics also focuses on supporting Rwandan peace-keeping forces in Sudan’s Darfur region. “We are in charge of maintenance of vehicles and some requirements to the soldiers in peace keeping mission,” Haguma said.

    MTN latest promotion ‘Faranga Y’ello Y’ello’ has for the second week given out Frw 11M to 11 subscribers who won Frw 1M each and came from different parts of the country, in an event held Tuesday at 11am at Kimironko Market in Kigali.

    Speaking to igihe.com, Alain Numa, MTN’s officer in charge, sponsorship and coordination said, “This promotion is MTN’s program to celebrate 13 years on market in Rwanda and to do this we have to celebrate together with our clients in the sense of uplifting their standards of living.”

    Among the winners Goderiva Mukamusugi a Community Health Worker at Rukara Health Center in Kayonza district said, “I were with friends and received a call notifying me that I had won and said ‘God has really fulfilled my plans’ as I had requested earlier though friends could keep on telling me it’s a lie.”

    She says she’s a mother to a boy with transplanted kidney whose operation cost a lot of money and the family remained bankrupt.

    “I opened a small Boutique around and prayed to God to help me get money to develop it and help my son to study. Now God has responded positively,” Mukamusugi who was accompanied by her husband John Bosco Nkusi and her daughter one Lydia excitedly said.

    She said she is going to mobilize other people to always pray because that God is always there to respond saying it’s a miracle given but not worked for.

    Sarah Nyiranshimiyimana of Rukoma Sector, Kamonyi district in the southern province, also a winner of Frw 1M said that she is going to expand her retail shop with stock worth Frw 300, 000 and start a bar along side.

    Among other winners Issa Mutabazi of Musaza, Kirehe district who is involved in supplying cows to meat parkers in Kigali note, “I was ridding my Motorcycle around and received a call about it”.

    “ I couldn’t believe it until today when they took us to the MTN Centre to sign for our money. I thought it was a plan by MTN with some officials that mobilize and bribe people upcountry and bring them as winners but now I realize that there is a free and fair promotional event because there’s no official either known or related to me from MTN.”

    This time, out of 11 winners of a Million each, four were females and seven were males.

    At the end of the promotion, one grand winner will go away with Frw13M as the biggest single cash prize ever given out by MTN Rwanda.
