  • Man Stabbed, All Teeth Crashed Out

Over the weekend, a man identified as Nduwayezu Felicien in Burera district was severely injured after he was stabbed and his teeth crashed out by a group of young men under the influence of a highly alcoholic illegal substance.

The incidence happened in Gahunga sector of Burera district where multiple murders had occurred including a case where a man killed his one and a half year old child, stabbed his wife and attacking several neighbors before taking his own life.

The man identified as Nhsimiyimana Emmanuel is reported to have been under the influence of an illegal alcoholic brew locally known as “munini”

Nduwayezu said,“We were drinking when my friends attacked me. We were drinking that brew called munini.” He explained
Nduwayezu is now admitted at Gahunda health centre.

François Xavier Urimubenshi a doctor at the health centre revealed that Nduwayezu was in very bad condition when he was brought in but adding that he is now hopeful he will make a full recovery.

Burera district mayor Sembagare Samuel commenting on the incident urged area residents to report any illegal activities especially selling and consumption of illegal brews because it has led to serious crimes of assault and murder.

“I am asking the residents to be their neighbor’s watchful eye. I am laying a lot of emphasis on this; we do not want to hear of these cases of assault again,” The mayor said.

He warned, “All the bars should operate within the legal hours, when they exceed late into the night, this is when the illegal brews are sneaked in and consequently they start behaving like insane people.”

The mayor said that the district authorities and security organs have taken strict measures to crack down on the distributors of this illegal brew.

  • 50 Cent Appeals to Young African Entrepreneurs

    SK-ENERGY-BOTTLES.jpg
U.S. Rapper 50 Cent is looking for business partners from Africa, to be the sole distributors of his energy drink SK in their respective countries.

His intention is to choose a partner in every country in Africa, to work closely with him on marketing and selling the brand in their respective state.

SK, which stands for Street King, is an energy drink developed by the musician and businessman to not only provide a body boost, but also raise cash for starving populations in Africa.

“Giving back to hungry children with every shot we sell is only part of the story. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel across Africa, and one thing I’ve learned is that it is filled with vibrant, young entrepreneurs who are eager to cultivate a sustainable business sector that will fuel growth for their future.

That’s why I’m giving African entrepreneurs the chance to bring SK to their country,” said the rapper in a statement.

50 Cent recently visited Somalia and Kenya, where he toured schools in Somalia and Kibera slum Nairobi.

“Everyone thought that we would expand immediately to Europe or South America. But if you know SK, you know the vision has always been to support my roots in Africa,” he said.

“I’ve had so much interest coming from Africa since I’ve launched SK. That’s why I’m opening up submissions to entrepreneurs across the continent to become distribution partners.”

  • Third World War – Coming Soon

The third world war won’t be about countries fighting countries. But, it will be just as bloody, devastating, intensely cruel and oblivious to the value of human life.

It will be a war fought on three fronts. On one side the have-nots on another the haves and lurking on the periphery like vultures waiting for protagonists to rip each other apart, will be the opportunists.

No one will escape. No country will be able to remain neutral and carry on business and life as usual because unlike previous world wars, almost every country in the world is now heavily dependent on survival by other countries thanks to the spread of globalisation.

    Survival

The Signs are There to See, Plain at Day

At Marikina in South Africa for example, where miners were prepared to die to earn more. They rejected their biggest union. They rejected calls by the police. They allegedly actually hacked a couple of policemen to death. A lot of them died in a fusillade of bullets.

Whether or not they are being paid enough is beside the point. Facts and reality are not going to be important in the third world war. It will be a war fuelled by perception.

Whether or not the Marikana miners earn 10 times less than their counterparts in Australia or 100 times less than Lonmin’s COO, will not be up for debate or justification.

Earning disparity will not be what will cause today’s isolated disputes to escalate into a world war. It will simply be a question of the have-nots being unable to put food on the table and a roof over their heads.

It will be no good saying that workers are lucky to have jobs and that they should think about those people who have no jobs.

    Survival is Survival

When you think about it – the Arab Spring uprisings have all been about the haves and the have-nots.

Just about every incident of social unrest that makes the news headlines these days has got an element of the have and have not syndrome.

    Things are Beginning to Turn

Research that I have done over the past 10 years on consumer behaviour shows quite clearly now that all over the world the common denominator is a desperation by the consumer for something to trust.

The banking scandals, religious scandals, political scandals and increasing incidents of what is perceived to be blatant corporate greed, have left the average consumer completely disconsolate about those who are supposed to be leading by example.

There was a time when demonstrations of wealth by corporate and political bigwigs actually inspired the have-nots to achieve greater things in life. I am not sure that works all that well anymore.

Even in South Africa where displays of wealth and power have been culturally embedded for centuries, things are beginning to turn with powerful politicians and businessmen being seen less as role models and more as just fats cats.

The growing number of service delivery protests in this country are becoming more intense, more violent and more bloody.

    Phenomenon of Entitlement

In South Africa today the phenomenon of entitlement has become stronger and stronger and the pursuit of entitlement has developed to a point where the taking of human life is simply part of the process.

I believe that killing will become increasingly part of the have-nots’ strategy because they perceive it has been part of the have’s culture for centuries.

One could go on and on with depressing examples of how the third world war will develop.

The most important point is that there is only one reason for it and that is the increasing gap between the haves and the have-nots.

Fuelling this is the fact that the global economic system has been found to be severely flawed. The whole process of a world entirely dependent on economic growth is flawed.

The notion of the main corporate objective being to provide shareholders with ongoing value is flawed.

The way the world is run on the basis of money being far more important than morality is flawed.

    The Real Sadness

And the more the haves continue to apply Band Aids to the gaping wounds of the economic system, the more militant the have-nots will become.

The real sadness is that anyone who speaks out against flaws in the economic system is usually dismissed as a communist, socialist or trouble-maker.

What worries me is that it does not take rocket science to realised that the biggest danger the world faces today is the widening gap between the haves and the have-nots. And no government in the world seems to be doing anything about changing things.

It is almost as though politicians and the world’s wealthy are all just hoping that the status quo will remain in place during their lifetimes and that they will be able to continue enjoying the power, the glory and the wealth and leave the cataclysmic consequences to the next generation.

    The opportunists

I am not convinced that the time frame for the third world war is that long.

Add to this mix, that third player – the opportunists. These are the people who disrupt memorial services to make political statements; these are the people who fan the flames of anger to score political points; these are the people who prey on the poor, to rob them and con them out of their paltry wages; these are the peple who make money out of misery by supplying drugs and weapons.

These are the people who will stop at nothing to enrich themselves.

As I said, it is going to be a dirty, bloody third world war.

  • Uganda to Host CECAFA Tournament

Uganda will host the 2012 East and Central Africa Senior Challenge Cup after Kenya was stripped of hosting rights due to its poor organisation, officials said.

Kenya was appointed to host the regional competition at the last Cecafa congress meeting in Dar es Salaam last December.

However, general secretary Nicholas Musonye said they have had to reverse that decision after the tournament sponsors, East African Breweries Limited asked to move it to Kampala.

“The sponsors raised their concern over the organizational abilities of the Football Kenyan Federation, which has been accused of being so divisive.”

“The sponsor has the final obligation to make their decision where they would want the tournament to be held. It’s Uganda and that is their stand,” said Musonye.

Meanwhile Rwanda President Paul Kagame hosted the Cecafa champions-Yanga Africans Sports Club of Tanzania- Village Urugwiro, 23 August.

President Kagame noted that sponsorship of the regional tournament (populary known as Kagame Cup) will continue even after he leaves political office.

  • Minister Mushikiwabo Receives Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Rwanda, Louise Mushikiwabo, received H.E Didier Reynders, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and European Affairs of the Kingdom of Belgium.

According to Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Discussions between the two Ministers focused on the crisis in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and bilateral cooperation between Rwanda and Belgium, where they agreed to enhance cooperation vis-à-vis investment sector and other various sectors in order to enhance development and keep close the already existing relationship.

“Rwanda is a very important partner in development” said Reynders.

After discussions, Minister Louise Mushikiwabo and Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Reynders hosted a joint press conference with local and international media.

Reynders told press that the important part of his visit, and the discussions along, was dedicated to the situation in the Region, especially in the eastern part of Democratic Republic of Congo.

Crisis in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Aid suspension to Rwanda and violence acts against Rwandans by some Congolese people in Belgium are the most subjects which dominated the press conference.

Belgian Foreign Minister Reynders said that blaming Rwanda for supporting DRC is not the best solution.

“It is not the best way to blame one country. But we have to put pressure on all the partners – the Congo, the neighbouring countries, the international community – and now it is urgent to take to the floor [at the UN] for a solution”.

He said that the task to guarantee a real integrity of DRC is not only from Congo but also from all partners. “We urge all the partners to take any necessary measures to stop the violence” said Reynders.

He further said he was praised to listen from President Paul Kagame and Minister Mushikiwabo on Rwanda’s commitment and will to participate in stability and peace process in the region.

Mushikiwabo explained that what happens to M23, or any other rebels in Democratic Republic of Congo, is much more a decision of DRC and the region not a decision of Rwanda.

“If DRC decides to go a certain way and the region thinks it is the appropriate way of course Rwanda will support it. But Rwanda has no decision to make on behalf of DRC.” Said Minister MUSHIKIWABO.

The visiting Belgian minister also spoke about recent incidents involving Rwandans in Belgium who have repeatedly been attacked by Congolese nationals, and have faulted Brussels for not doing enough to stop the violence.

The latest such incident took place on Saturday, with reports indicating that another Rwandan was attacked and reportedly stabbed in the abdomen.

“We have organised all possible activities for proper prosecution. It is unacceptable – we have the police, the logistics and we will do what it takes,” Reynders noted.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and European affairs H.E Didier Reynders, and his delegation visited the Democratic Republic of Congo before coming to Rwanda via Rubavu border town which Rwanda shares with DRC.

He also visited displaced Congolese Refugees in Nkamira transit Centre in Rubavu district.

  • Trial of Chad’s former Leader Hissene Habre to Start 2012

The Senegalese government says it intends to start proceedings against Chad’s former leader Hissene Habre before the end of 2012.

Under the deal signed August 22 between Senegal and African Union, an African magistrate will preside over the special court in Senegal and will be assisted by two Senegalese judges.

“We are one step closer to justice today,” said Alioune Tine, president of the Dakar-based African Assembly for the Defense of Human Rights (RADDHO).

“We’re counting on Senegal and the African Union to move quickly now and to begin Habre’s trial before even more survivors die.”

“Through the agreement, we are setting the procedure by which the trial should take place,” said Senegal’s Justice Minister Aminata Toure after signing the agreement with African Union representative Robert Dossou in the capital, Dakar.

“There are no more obstacles. We are going to start recruiting judges”, she added.

The International Court of Justice ruled on July 21 that Senegal had breached its international obligations by failing to make immediately a preliminary inquiry into the facts relating to the crimes allegedly committed by Hissène Habré.

According to the ruling, Senegal must “without further delay, submit the case of Mr. Hissène Habré to its competent authorities for the purpose of prosecution, if it does not extradite him”. The court’s ruling was legally binding.

  • Malawi, Tanzania Disagree on Lake Malawi Ownership

Although Tanzania and Malawi have recently said that they wouldn’t resort to war to solve the lake Malawi ownership crisis, the two neighbours have failed to agree on ownership of the lake with Malawi insisting it owns it 100%.

During eight days of Malawi and Tanzania boarder diplomatic discussions that ended on Saturday in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe, no agreement was attained thus stalling, forcing the high-level government representatives to pursue, further, the misunderstanding from September 10, 2012 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

This was expressed at a news Conference, Saturday, in a communiqué that was produced and signed by Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ephraim Mganda Chiume and Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Bernard Kamilia Membe respectively, at the end of the meeting at Bingu International Conference Centre in Lilongwe, Malawi.

“After signing a communiqué which was produced from the discussions that representatives of both Malawi and Tanzania discussed, we are happy to announce to the media and all those who are concerned with the boarder misunderstanding issue, that we had a peaceful diplomatic negotiations in our meeting.

“We have finally agreed to meet again on September 10, 2012 in Dar es Laam in Tanzania to continue our discussions,” reads the Communiqué.

The meeting also agreed to allow attorney generals of the two countries to evaluate the 1890 treaty which determined the border of the lake.

Highlighting what transpired at the meeting, Membe initially said he took the meeting as ‘very historic,’ emphasizing, “that was evidenced by having high-level officials of the two neighbouring countries engaged physically in the boarder misunderstanding between Malawi and Tanzania.”

Minister Membe said:”The only thing I can say here is that we had good and peaceful discussions since Saturday, August 20, 2012 here in Malawi covering concerns of the two parties (Malawi and Tanzania boarder misunderstanding or disagreements.

“I thank all the officials and representatives of the two countries to this meeting. They made our discussions easy to follow and so focused, as they worked with dedication day and night, to the extent that some of them slept late at dawn.

“However our differences still remained unresolved, we need to go ahead with this meeting. We have agreed to meet in Tanzania from September 10 to 14, 2012,” said Membe.

He emphatically said they should handle the Malawi and Tanzania boarder issue with a degree of diplomacy, adding that as such the media fraternity should cover the misunderstanding with a sense of fairness, responsibility and ‘ especially avoiding being provocative’.

“We want to ensure that the people of the two neighbouring countries continue living in peace,” said Minister Membe

He hinted that exploration activities on the border areas that were affected in the misunderstanding should discontinue, adding that they should be stalled until the Dar es Salaam meeting reached conclusion.

Taking his turn, Chiume disclosed that the meeting was a follow up of a similar meeting the representatives of the two countries initially held in Tanzania on July 27, 2012.

He explained that before they arrived at the signing of the communiqué in Lilongwe Saturday, August 25, 2012 they started meeting at Mzuzu Hotel on Saturday, August 20, 2012, in the Northern Region.

Chiume said the boarder misunderstanding had existed for over 50 years, adding that it was important for the two neighbouring countries to arrive at an agreement, amicably, for people of both countries to continue undertaking their trading activities peacefully.

“This issue has been there for 50 years, even during the time of late President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania.

“If we take long time solving this issue diplomatically, the people of the two countries would be negatively affected. So we need to speed up the process of solving it,” appealed Malawi Minister Chiume
He said he hoped when they meet in Tanzania in September the misunderstanding would be left to rest.

“I hope when we meet in Tanzania in September we put the matter to rest for good and forever,” he said.

The Malawi and Tanzania boarder issue has resurfaced as Malawi government engaged a company from Britain this year to explore on Lake Malawi and see if there were oil deposits.

The scenario had forced President Mrs Joyce Banda of Malawi to hold tete a tete (one on one ) closed meeting during the 32nd Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit , which was held from 17th to 18th August, 2012 in Maputo, Mozambique.
