Congolese Soldiers Defect to New Rebel Movement

A new armed group has formed just a few weeks ago has attracted more officers from the Congolese army.

They claim the district Commissioner and prosecutor have since joined the group.

The New group is known as the Popular Resistance Movement of Congo (MRPC) in Ituri district in Orientale Province.

The group accuses Kinshasa government of diverting taxes paid by some mining companies including AGK and Mwana Africa.

MRPC is also demanding for an investigation into the death of Floribert Kisembo, a FARDC general who died in 2011.

Congolese Military officials say they are aware of the existence of new armed group and promise to neutralize it.

Eric Dedonga, lawyer and Jules Musafiri of former UPC militia UPC, respectively are President and Chief of General Staff of the new rebel movement.

The inhabitants of several villages Djugu reported seeing columns of fighters of a new armed group since the beginning of last August.

Coalition armed groups in Ituri (Cogai) created in May claimed an amnesty for all militias operating in Ituri and the recognition of this district province of the DRC as well as the departure of Col. Fal Sikabwé, current head of the military region of Ituri, accusing him of murdering Gen. Floribert Kisembo.
